Badminton is the only sport in which Malaysia have ever won an Olympic medal, but despite the fact they entered a top-ranked doubles team (Choong and Lee), and two top ten singles players, Wong Choong Hann and Lee Chong Wei, they were unable to add to their medal total. Both Wong and Lee won their opening round matches, then had two of the longest second round matches of the tournament, both taking more than an hour and twenty minutes before losing in three sets. The best performance from a Malaysian entry was the quarterfinal showing from the doubles team of Choong and Lee, who were upset by an unseeded Korean pair.
Malaysia's lone cyclist in Athens managed to make the final in the keirin, but was relegated by the race officials, and finished 6th of 6 riders.
None of the three Malaysian divers managed to progress beyond the preliminary round in their event(s).
Ng Shu Wai did not advance to the all-around final, nor to any apparatus finals.
Malaysia's only sailor in Athens had a highest finish of seventh in the final race to move into the top twenty-five in the Laser event.
Both Malaysian shooters finished second-to-last in their events, and did not advance beyond the qualifying round.
The only Malaysian to qualify from an opening heat was Alex Lim Keng Liat in the men's 100 metre backstroke. Lim made the semifinal, but could not repeat his time from the heat in the semi, and was eliminated with a 15th place finish, the highest for the Malaysian swim team in Athens.
